Let's Go Fly a Kite

The wide-open space and March winds are calling you to Aycock Birthplace. The “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” event, Saturday, March 18, noon-3 p.m., will allow you enjoy an area without electrical and phone lines as you capture the breezes. The free program welcomes all ages to come see how high you can fly. For the first time this year, “Raven” the flagship helicopter of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, will join in the celebration of mastering the sky. The aviation unit will explain how helicopters aid with law enforcement and searching for missing persons A new kite exhibit, “Flying Kites with Delia” which has colorful sketches was written for elementary aged children, will open. The 11 panel traveling exhibition is on loan from the Museum of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City. Visitors will learn that Orville and Wilbur Wright experimented with kites before perfecting the first flight of an airplane, and other gems of kite history.
